You know, I find it funny when people go looking for authentic cuisine at a restaurant and then complain when people who work there 'can't speak english'. That normally means the food is going to be about as authentic as you can get! That quip aside, I enjoyed my visit to El Sol. I went with my superhero idol Deadpool's favorite and ordered the chimichanga. It was excellent and grilled, rather than being messily fried which I appreciated. The beef inside wasn't skimped and was plentiful and the peppers and onions that accompanied then were well seasoned and grilled. It does have some issues. For instance, the restaurant is extremely small and calling it a 'hole in the wall' wouldn't be an exaggeration and they look to be more interested in serving as a local dive bar rather than a restaurant. Additionally, they either can't afford a soda machine or they choose not to use one, so don't expect refills unless you want to pay for everyone individually.

Alrighty! Well I just finished dinner at El Sol. I wasnt sure what to expect from the small shopping center locale but I was starving. The place is cute quaint and reminds me of every lil bar I've ever been to in P. Rico. Even tho the food is Mostly Mexican, some Salvadoran etc. Lil tables of four with table cloths and glass tops were very cute. There was a tv playing Univision of course and my Spanish was luckily still intact enough to be entertained. The waitress was adorable and helpful and every time I put down my fork she was there to ask if I needed anything. Awesome sauce she was. I ordered the Bistec Rancheros, a papusa and a tamale con pollo. All DELICIOUS! Tamale was a lil bland but the steak and over medium eggs YUMMMMO! Drinks (and I mean soft drinks) are NOT refillable and in a can which is the ONLY reason why I didn't give 5 stars. I had a Pina Colada and it was good AND strong! A++ (And appealed to my foofie girlie side because it was pretty too). Altogether portions were a good size. And total came to 32 bux. Not bad not great as far as a deal but, worth the $. If you're in Silver Spring I'd say it's authentic and tasty, so check it out.

Not so happy about the service. The waitress was rude. She just threw the plates on the table. She didn't greet us. The food was actually really really good!!! I can't complaint about that. If you ever chose to come I recommend it because the food is good! Order out so you won't have to deal with the rude waitress.

It is more like 3.5. This is a great place to get a variety of Latin American food in a home-made style for the price you pay. The place is nicely decorated, right off of u-street. Nothing to go crazy about, but cozy.

Great, authentic and delicious food. Must admit we we're prepared not to like this place. The service was really poor as there was only one waitress that seemed in-attentive, but she was tending bar, waiting tables, and helping in the kitchen at the same time. She was very friendly so we don't fault her for being understaffed. We were very pleasantly surprised when the food came out though. It was freshly prepared, authentic, delicious, and filling. I had a sandwich that reminded me fondly of an authentic Cuban shop I've visited on other travels. The sides were also great, more than just filler. We are planning to return. One word of warning, the margaritas were egregiously expensive! My wife had one that was small, not very strong, with just house liquor... $10! We'll stick with the normally priced beer next time.

Great for lunch carry out. 10 minute pick up, for a good well cook meal. Not like Wendy's or Subway that is next door. Yuck! I've had their carne asada twice. Not bad at all. The steak had a great flavor. The salad was a little blah. No dressing given. Their bistec ranchero is really good. It brings avocado which is a plus. Not sure if I spelled it correctly. They now have an English speaking server! That's great news! We can communicate not only in Spanish now.

If I could give negative stars, I would. My family and I went to El Sol on 5 April 2015. We ordered a chicken fajita ($12.95), kids quesadilla ($4.95), and chicken enchiladas ($9.95). Total, $28.00 plus $6.00 in beverages (34.00). Our total came out to $46.80. When I asked the waitress to see the bill, she told me that the prices in the menu aren't actually what patrons get charged--they get charged more by the computer. We told her we wanted to pay the prices advertised, and she said she couldn't because she already slid the card. After going back and forth, she said the manager wasn't there and can't help because she doesn't speak English. We took photos of the menu demonstrating the prices we should have been charged, and I have the receipt. She took a photo of the cash register to show us that the computer was charging the money. We informed her that businesses aren't allowed to practice this sort of behavior, but she said there was nothing she could do to help us. Then she said if we didn't pay, the total would be taken out of her tips. In the end, she gave us $10 to make up for the price difference. This is unfair to the waitress and to the patrons who think they will be paying a certain price. ^^ taken directly from my subsequent complaint to the Better Business Bureau. The food was average for a Mexican restaurant. But charging the customers differently than what's on the menu is improper.

I really want to like this place more but I think the lack of business it gets really limits its potential. Nestled in the not-ghetto-but-still-sketchy strip known as Briggs Chaney shopping center, is this almost-always-empty Salvadorean/Mexican joint. The first time I went, I tried to order a few things and the person working the register said they don't have it. I'm guessing they never have it. Why bother if you hardly get any customers to begin with? Out of the things I wanted to try, they did have the "Tamales de Pollo o Elote," "Quesadilla de Pollo o Carne," and the "Enchiladas Salvadorenas." I wouldn't go out of my way to try this place, but if you happen to be in the area and aren't feeling the Cluck-U's, go for the Enchiladas Salvadorenas. Ask for chicken even though the menu only states beef--it is better. The tortilla is the important element of this for me, and it doesn't stay crispy forever so eat it quickly. I believe they deep fry the tortilla after you place your order... in fact, they might make everything right after your order because this place manages to taste fresh and greasy at the same time. The textures that you go through in one bite include chewy chicken, crispy (or soggy depending on how long it takes you to get to it) tortilla and crunchy shredded cabbage. I'm not sure if it really has eggs in it... I don't really remember it if it was there. Top it with a hefty sprinkle of Parmesan cheese and salsa, and you get what is probably the best tasting food item that you could purchase within the entire plaza. For $2.50, it's very affordable (don't expect anything big though). The tamales were pretty average, a bit on the greasy side. As an aside, this place is generous with their oil... if you stay the whole time they're coming up with your order, you WILL leave smelling greazy... with a "z." I got the one with chicken... for $2, I'd rather chalk up the extra 50 cents to get another enchilada though. I got the chicken (again) for the quesadilla and it was what a chicken quesadilla should be. $7.95 seemed about right considering the size of the thing. The person working the register was very nice. I asked her what horchata was and she got a small cup and gave me a generous sample. I've never had horchata anywhere else before but from the one I had there, I liked it. It reminded me of a Korean grain drink called misoo, only it wasn't quite as thick and it had the wonderful addition of cinnamon and vanilla (I think?). Pretty yummy, and again, affordable ($2.00). The place seems fairly clean but I don't know if it's because they put in a lot of effort to keep it clean or if it's because at most there is only one other family eating there when I go. Another tip, try to have change on hand. Two out of the three times I went, the poor lady had to scrounge around in order to give me back my change. I'm going to assume it's because they hardly get customers in so they don't even keep the register stocked.

I went to this place to eat last night and I found a piece of hair in my Veggie Burrito, I almost got sick. I called the location to speak to a manager, to explain what happened. They hung the phone up on me 5 times and still no manager available. I will never do business there again and its nasty.

Nice laid back environment with authentic Latin American cuisine. My companion is from Central America and thought the tacos were the best she has had in the DC area. She even got some to go. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful, the kitchen does take their time to prepare fresh food nicely done....you can actually here chopping noises coming from the back. Football/Soccer was being played on a big screen tv, and the couple times I have been there one spanish language song randomly would be blast over the digital juke box, perhaps some agreement they have with the digital music provider allowing them to play a promotional song at random. I nice place to check out if you are in the area.

Everyone's reviews are very much on point to me - it's always empty, the food is just ok, although the pupusas are pretty good and have a nice burnt, cheesy edge to them. They have one of those almost too extensive menus and then they don't have what you want (pan con pavo for example). The music is often too loud as you sit and eat and wonder where's the party? cause it sure as hell ain't here. If I remember correctly, they do have a bar, just no one sitting at it. All in all, definitely not a destination, plus within 5 minutes of El Sol, you have Taco-Mex, Chapala's and Palapa's and seriously, something's gonna have to give.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
